On this tour, we’ll leave to see Kulen Mountain which is one of the most sacred spots in the whole of Cambodia. It’s where the ancient Khmer empire first started and it was also the quarry for many of the temples built at Angkor. It was here that King Jayavarman II claimed independence from the Java in the 804.
The name means the “Mountain of the Lychees” and is a significant spot to visit. When we get to the top of the mountain you can go for a swim in a tropical waterfall surrounded by thick jungle. We can also relax by the river and stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, we can take an optional trip to Banteay Srey which is about 20km outside of Siem Reap town. This temple means the “Citadel of the Women” and it’s thought that the fine carvings on the walls could only have been carved by women as men were not delicate enough. The pink sandstone structure is a unique temple because it’s one of the few which wasn’t built by a king, instead it was built by a councilor to the king.
